Parenting with a Plan

I get e-mails from Parenting by Design -a Love and Logic friendly site focused on biblical foundations. You can find them at Today's e-mail included this

Releasing our children
"Ps. 127:3-4: Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth (NIV)."
"Children are gifts from God, but we must remember they will leave our home in 18-20 years. Our purpose as parents isn't to hold onto these gifts tightly, but to prepare them to be released like the arrows of a warrior.

We absolutely did the best we knew how to do as we raised our guys but we did not always have in mind a strategic plan for the end results hoped for. Mostly I just tried to make it through the day. Hindsight gives me the wisdom to know that I could have done some "lesson planning" to intentionally prepare them for some life skills to help them be more independent and competent earlier. (So - yep - I have some parenting regrets. They hurt. I survive by counting on God's loving forgiveness for my mistakes.)

Now that I have a background in strategic planning in my work life I wish I could have a "do over." Fortunately my guys are making progress and even late blooming parents can still make changes that have huge benefits for their children. So look for the next couple of posts to be about a Love and Logic friendly application of strategic planning skills to parenting.
