We've been looking at how the process of strategic planning can be applied to a family. Steven Covey called this "beginning with the end in mind. " Once you have a clear image of "the end" in mind (Vision) then the next step is "how" to get there.

Before you get started though... it's a good thing to look at Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities , and Threats (S.W.O.T.) Strengths and weaknesses are things that are INTERNAL to your family. Strengths your family can draw on could include level of education of parents, job security, financial resources, physical resources, health, creativity, work ethic, faith, strong relationships etc. Weaknesses could be the opposite of those but could also include things like where you live, strength of communication skills, marriage or parenting satisfaction.

Opportunities and Threats are the things that are part of the EXTERNAL environment in which your family functions. Opportunities could include a good job market for your profession, low cost housing, great schools nearby, a dynamic faith home (church). Threats could be a bad economy, potential job loss, inability to sell your current home, a poor neighborhood etc.

While it is disquieting to look at weaknesses and threats... life is about maximizing strengths and opportunities as much as possible and trying to minimize the potential impact of weaknesses and threats. Love and Logic helps you develop strong parenting skills which contributes to raising competent children who can live in the real world.
